First - let’s get down to the facts on oral bacteria:

  1. There are 50-100 billion bacteria species in your oral cavity.

  2. There are more than 700 different species of bacteria.

  3. We swallow one litre per day of saliva per day

  4. This biofilm causes plaque and tooth/gum disease

  5. This bacteria enters the stomach to disrupt the gut

  6. Causes inflammation, the root of disease is in your mouth

This associated inflammation is linked to:

  1. Heart disease

  2. Alzheimer's

  3. Diabetes

  4. COPD

  5. Gum disease

  6. Stroke

There is a definite connection between the oral bacteria and gut health…so what can we do about it? It’s essential to take the steps necessary to prevent the inflammation.

How do we address inflammation in the body?

Nutrition and diet are essential to pair with a holistic health approach. Our tried and true methods for addressing inflammation with diet include avoiding the following:

  1. Sugar

  2. Gluten

  3. Dairy

  4. refined oils

  5. Highly processed foods

  6. Alcohol

  7. GMO

Once we’ve assessed our current nutritional habits and adjusted our diet to eliminate foods that cause inflammation…what else can we do?

Our next step, is to introduce or expand on a selection of foods that optimize our health, including:

  1. Prebiotics

  2. Probiotics

  3. Polyphenols

  4. Healthy fats

  5. Organic, fibre-rich produce

  6. Pasture raised and grass-fed meats

  7. Wild caught seafood

Well, that seems simple enough…right? To be fair…there’s more to add to this recipe for healthy success; however it’s absolutely manageable to include into your daily routine…especially when working with a supportive fitness and health trainer!

What other factors are essential to include for fitness and optimal health?

  1. Exercise-minimum of 300 intensity minutes weekly (45 minutes a day!)

  2. Manage stress

  3. Eliminate toxins

  4. Sleep and rest

There we have it…your first step in further awareness about oral bacteria and gut bacteria, the associated inflammation, and your first steps for addressing and making improvements for your overall health!
